Label TextAmong the best scholar-printers of the early sixteenth century was Josse Bade (who Latinized his name to Joyous Radius Ascensions. He started his career in Italy, learned the printing trade in Lyon, and then moved to Paris in 1499. There he printed and published ancient classics and contemporary texts including works by Erasmus and the noted French scholar Guillaume Budd. This is Budd's most famous book. a treatise on ancient coins and measures. Bade was impressed by the books published by Aldus Manutius in Venice. Breaking with the French gothic tradition, Bade printed his classical editions in roman type, with initials and title pages in the Venetian style. The woodcut illustration on this title page is the earliest known pictorial representation of a printing press. This image was the device for Bade's press, which was named Praelum Alcensianis.
