Anthony CraggBritish, active Germany, born 1949

British sculptor Tony Cragg, born in Liverpool, began his professional life in the sciences, as a lab technician at the National Rubber Producers’ Research Association, a vocation he pursued for only a year. However, this early interest in science would continue to inform his work throughout his career as an artist. He received his BA degree from the Wimbledon School of Art in 1973 and his MA from the Royal College of Art in 1977. He taught at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf for a decade, from 1978-1988. Early in his career, he was given his first solo exhibition at the Lisson Gallery in London, followed by work accepted at the 1980 Venice Biennale, and the 7th Documenta in 1982. He received the Turner Prize in 1988, the van-der-Heydt Prize in 1989, and the 1st Prize in sculpture at the Beijing Biennale in 2005, among others. He was elected Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres in 1992 and to the Akademie der Künste, Berlin, in 2002. His work is included in numerous museums and private collections around the world. He still holds a professorship at the Kunstakademie in Düsseldorf and maintains a studio and an art foundation in Wuppertal, Germany, where he has lived and worked since 1977.
