Philippe Halsman is largely remembered for his photojournalist portraits of famous film stars, artists, scientists, and other luminaries that graced over 100 covers of Life and Time Magazine. Halsman first began practicing portrait photography in Europe before the outbreak of World War II and became well known for his use of sharp focus and close cropping, both of which were unusual for photography at the time. After emigrating to the United States in the 1950s he introduced his revolutionary 'jumpology' method- in which he captures his sitters jumping in mid-air. These humorous, kinetic, low-angle portraits highlight Halsman's playful and unique approach to photography and his search of new possibilities for expressiveness in portraiture.
