Maria Martinez (1887-1980) remains one of the most well-known Indigenous artists of the 20th century, with her work being widely exhibited during her lifetime and beyond. Beginning in 1956, she worked with her son Popovi Da (1923-1971). A highly skilled and innovative potter in his own right, Popovi also served as governor of San Ildefonso for six terms.
