Yatreda is a family-based Ethiopian artistic collective that creates digital artwork minted on a blockchain—a peer-to-peer, shared online record of transactions. Led by Kiya Tadele, Yatreda’s Creative Director, the group creates artwork which balances the new, like blockchain technology, with the old, preserving classic legends of historical and cultural significance. This blend suggests the timeline of African history doesn’t simply end, and the stories are not finished. Yatreda is about rediscovering Africa’s original self once again and their digital artwork adopts the style of tizita—nostalgia and longing for the past. In 2024, Yatreda (Kiya Tadele and her husband Joey Lawrence) were invited to be TMA's 2024 Digital Artist in Residence. During their residency they created their multisensory and multispatial experience, House of Yatreda, within Ethiopia at the Crossroads. The digital artwork Yatreda developed during their residency bridges the ancient and the contemporary and Ethiopia and Toledo, weaving together Ethiopian culture and lessons learned from their time as part of the TMA and Toledo community.
