Huguette CalandLebanese, 1931 - 2019
Huguette Caland (b. 1931—d. 2019, Beirut, Lebanon) began painting when she was 16 taking private art lessons from Italian artist Fernando Manetti who lived in Lebanon. She attended the American University of Beirut to continue her art studies then lived in Paris to embark on her artistic career for the next 17 years. In 1987, encouraged by her filmmaker son, she moved to Venice, California, where she was based until 2013, before returning to Beirut to be with her father who became ill. She lived in Beirut until her death in 2019.
While she has been working for decades, Caland has only recently received critical recognition in the U.S. for her expansive body of work. She had her first solo institutional exhibition in the U.S. in 2021 at The Drawing Center in New York, which traveled to Wiels Museum in Brussel, Belgium. The artist was included in the Sharjah Biennale 14 (2019); 57th Venice Biennale exhibition (2017); and Made in LA at the Hammer Museum, UCLA (2016). She is now in a range of institutional collections, including Centre Pompidou, Paris; LACMA; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; MoMA, New York; MFA Houston; San Diego Museum of Art; and Tate Modern, London.
