Ozaki Kokusai 尾崎谷斎Japanese, 1835 - 1894
Kokusai 谷斎 (Ozaki Kokusai 尾崎谷斎), 1835-1894. Kokusai was active in the late nineteenth century in Tokyo. He worked in a distinctive and highly original style that is easily recognizable, employing many different types of scrolling and circular motifs in his designs. His favorite material was stag antler, which was also widely used by his fellow carvers working in the downtown Asakusa district of Tokyo. At 21 he entered the school of Gyokuyosai Mitsuhina, and studied ivory carving. He was said to be left-handed.
