Meigyokusai 明玉斎 (Hiraga Tanetsugu 平賀), 1896-1991. Studied under Shogin, whose carving lineage goes back to Gyokuzan. Was very versatile in both technique and subject matter. Often drew upon old classical designs for his subjects, but his original designs, like his twelve-animals-of-the-zodiac netsuke, were outstanding. Received prizes for carving before he was twenty-five. Primarily carved in ivory. He was also a noted poet.
