Lucy T. Pettway

American, 1921 - 2004
BiographyRaised and trained by several of Gee’s Bend’s most serious quiltmakers, Lucy T. Pettway, known as “Lunky,” made quilts for seven decades. She has been more curious than most of her peers about patterns that originate outside the area, which she collects and transforms. She was known as a keen observer of the world around her. She would document the things that caught her attention during walks through the field to and from work each day, including quilts that she would see hanging on clothes lines. She would draw patterns from things things, using them as inspiration in her quilts.
