Giò PomodoroItalian, 1930 - 2002
Giò Pomodoro was a sculptor, printmaker, and stage designer. In 1954 he moved to Milan, where he associated with leading avant-garde artists and started making jewelry. He then began to produce reverse reliefs in clay and also formed assemblages of various materials, including wood, textiles, and plaster subsequently cast in metal. The assemblage-like jewelry that Pomodoro is known for allowed the artist to work out his ideas for sculptures, but this also worked in reverse with sculpture providing inspiration for his jewelry. In the 1960s, Pomodoro moved away from more organic forms to studies of surface tension combining geometric elements to smooth surfaces.
