Frank Paulin

American, 1926 - 2008
BiographyBorn in Pittsburgh, Paulin (1926- 2008) was raised in New York and Chicago. His photo-journalistic talents developed during World War II when he joined the Army and photographed the wartime devastation of German cities. After the war, Paulin studied at the Institute of Design in Chicago, where Harry Callahan and Laszlo Maholy-Nagy were members of the faculty, and later in NYC under Alexey Brodovitch who assisted him in developing his signature aesthetic. In 1957, Paulin had his first solo exhibition at Limelight Gallery, New York’s only fine art photography gallery at that time. Since then his work has been exhibited widely, including two recent solo exhibitions at the Lowe Art Museum, Miami and the Milwaukee Art Museum. His work can be found in the collections of over 30 institutions, among them, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, and the Yale Art Gallery.
