Bill Scott (b. 1956) was born in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania and studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (1974-1979). He considers his subsequent time working with painters Joan Mitchell and Jane Piper as his most influential training. Most recognized as a painter in the Philadelphia colorist tradition, in 1999 he began making etchings based on his paintings. Color intaglio allowed him to combine plates, colors, and techniques, creating several different versions of the same print. His printmaking experience, and the different levels of possibility it provided, has played a major role in developing Scott’s most recent paintings.

In 2004, Scott was the recipient of an Independence Foundation Fellowship in the Arts, Philadelphia and the Adolph and Clara Obrig Prize from the National Academy Museum, New York. His work is included in many public and private collections, including the Cleveland Museum of Art, Delaware Art Museum, Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Munson-Williams-Proctor Institute Museum of Art, and the British Museum.
