Käthe Kollwitz was a German printmaker and sculptor born in Königsberg, East Prussia (now Kaliningrad, Russia). She studied at the Artists' School in Berlin. In 1891, she married and settled with her husband Karl Kollwitz in north Berlin, a working-class district where he practiced medicine. Kollwitz is particularly known for a moving images of victims of social injustice, war and inhumanity, particular during and following the World War I. In 1920, she was elected the first female member of the Prussian Academy of Arts. With the advent of National Socialism, Kollwitz was forced to resign her position and her works were suppressed. She died in Moritzburg, near Berlin, at the end of World War II.
