John Steuart CurryAmerican, 1897-1946

John Steuart Curry was an American artist born in Kansas. Living

within and beyond the American Midwest during his lifetime, Curry

worked in multiple mediums. He is most famous as a major American

Regionalist painter, though his engagement with Regionalism included

other forms such as printmaking.

After brief stint at the Kansas City Art Institute, Curry studied at Art

Institute of Chicago and Geneva College in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania.

He worked as a commercial illustrator before moving to Paris to further

his art education. His career as an artist included time spent working

and teaching in New York City, Kansas, and Wisconsin, along with

work under the Federal Arts Project in Washington D.C.
