Jacques Callot (born 1592, Nancy, France—died 1635, Nancy, France) was an important French artist who worked exclusively as a printmaker (one of the first). Callot initially worked in Italy (c. 1609–21) and then in Lorraine (France) from 1621 until his death. Callot is known for his depictions of courtly entertainments, caricatures, and the grotesque, such as the Balli di Sfessania (“Dance of Sfessania”), the Caprices, and the Hunchbacks. TMA has a full set of the Balli di Sfessania. In his last great series of etchings, the “small” (1632) and the “large” (1633) Miseries and Misfortunes of War, he depicted the atrocities of the Thirty Years’ War in a highly graphic manner.
