Deborah Aguado1939 -

Deborah Aguado was born in New York City in 1939. She attended

Hunter College in 1965 and the Tyler School of Art in 1967, though she

earned a BA in Urban Sociology and Anthropology from Brooklyn

College in 1972.[1] Her father’s career as an ironworker inspired

Aguado to experiment in metalworking.[2] Initially self-taught, her

earliest formal experimentations in constructivism began in 1973 when

she participated in a goldsmithing seminar at the Akademie für

Bildende Kunst in Salzburg, Austria.[3]In the same year, Aguado

received the State Honor Award in 1973 from at the Akademie für

Bildende Kunst. In 1973 she also helped form a jewelry department at

Sarah Lawrence College and a crafts program at the New School in

1974.[4] She earned a Master of Arts, Studio Arts, and Arts

Administration in 1982 from New York University.[5] She has won

numerous awards and has taught for many university and craft schools.

Her work resides in the Smithsonian, the Luce Foundation Center for

American Art, the Akademie für Bildende Kunst, Galerie Akademia,

and the Museum of Arts and Design, among others.[6] She

currently lives and works in New York.
