Label TextIn these screen prints Richard Estes creates the illusion of space with dramatic contrasts between light and dark, multiple reflections, line, color, and pattern. Although not a prolific printmaker, Estes found that the screen-printing process was very sympathetic to the style and working methods he used for his photo-realistic paintings (see Helene’s Florist, upper level, Gallery 9). Just as he meticulously adds layer upon layer of acrylic, oil paint, and glazing to his paintings, he found he could build up the clear, sharp lines and patterns of these prints using multiple screens. Although Estes relied on the technical expertise of the master printer Michael Domberger to reproduce his original designs, he participated in the process, occasionally cutting his own screens.Published Referencescf.
