DescriptionFor the first movement—“America—Before the War”—Caravaggio combines black and white archival footage with color. The images are ones of wonder, idyllic countryside and city skylines seen flitting through passenger windows. The second movement stands in stark contrast: “Europe—During the War” shows footage of Jewish citizens forced aboard Nazi deportation trains. The music is anxious and strained, the images horrible; a sense of shock is palpable. The third movement combines the moods of the first two: “After the War” is hopeful, but cautiously so. Images of American views are displayed next to memories of the Nazi trains, faces of survivors stare directly at the camera, and people shuffle off trains arriving in New York far away from war.
