DescriptionThe covered dish consists of two separate pieces, a body and lid.The design of a terrestrial globe in two hemispheres shows the outlines of the five continents and Antarctica, which is obscured by the swirled knop stem and wide foot that is attached to that area. The hemispherical body has a broad equatorial band on which the lid rests. The lid is surmounted by a head of Liberty/Columbia, wearing a Phrygian cap, which serves as the handle.
Label TextTechnically complex, this globe-shaped butter dish consists of several complicated pressed parts that are assembled and fused together. The form and decoration speak of a patriotic recognition of America’s economic and political role in the world in the late 19th century.Published ReferencesDrepperd, Carl L., The ABC's of Old Glass, Doubleday & Co; Fifth Edition edition (1949), pp. 85-86 (ill.).
