Exhibition HistoryToledo Museum of Art, Solo Exhibition of Edith Franklin's Ceramics, 1958.Label TextA much beloved and celebrated fixture of the Toledo art scene for more than six decades, Edith Franklin was an accomplished artist whose practice centered on ceramics. With artist Harvey Littleton (1922–2013) as her instructor and guide at the Toledo Museum of Art, Franklin quickly advanced from student to peer, and with his help, she and fellow ceramicist Joe Ann Cousino co-founded the Toledo Potter’s Guild in 1951. In 1962, she made history as one of the participants in the Museum’s groundbreaking glassblowing workshop, led by Littleton, which sparked the Studio Glass movement. In 1958 Franklin was given a solo exhibition at the Museum in which this ceramic pot was prominently displayed. Patio Pot was created during a formative and innovative phase in the first decade of the artist’s career, when Franklin was particularly fascinated with African pottery traditions, as evident in the formal qualities of this object.
