Label TextThis provocative photograph is part of a series titled HHH (Hedonistic Honky Haters), named for a fictional secret society invented by Indigenous Australian artist Fiona Foley. The group was “founded” in the U.S. in 1965 in reaction to the Ku Klux Klan. Foley’s photo reverses our usual perception of the KKK as the embodiment of white, racially-motivated violence and intimidation. With her striking depiction of a group of hooded figures dressed in colorful robes made from African textiles, Foley subverts the white hoods and robes so symbolic of white supremacist ideology. Her fictional activists turn the hate group into an object of satire and ridicule. HHH #1 represents a forceful photographic addition to TMA's fledging collection of contemporary Australian works on paper.Published ReferencesHelmrich, Michele, Fiona Foley: Forbidden, Sydney, Australia, Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney, 2010, p. 38, repr.
