Label TextAssociate Professor Emeritus at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, John Rozelle’s work speaks powerfully to socio-political concerns and the state of American race relations. Describing his practice, Rozelle notes, “My work lends itself to a continuum of common African object-making practices…In some societies, magical powers or mystical properties are often bestowed on what appears to be, to the uninitiated, apparently unrelated objects. I try to find spiritual connections in this object-making. African sensibilities are used in the presentation of contemporary social/political concerns, much like objects in use in African societies where traditional practices exist today.”Exhibition HistoryToledo Museum of Art, PICTURE ID: Contemporary African American Works on Paper, March 14-June 14, 2020.
