Label TextIsabella Kirkland (born 1954) embarked on the Taxa series of six paintings (1999–2004) after she saw the Sierra Club’s list of the 100 most endangered species in the United States. Drawing on detailed and artfully arranged Dutch 17th-century flower and animal paintings, she settled on the still life as the most effective way for her to relay her environmental messages. Exhaustively researched, each painting took more than a year to complete. In 2007–2008 the paintings were photographed and issued as a limited-edition portfolio of digital inkjet prints.
