Label TextGregory Seman was born and raised in Flint, Michigan, and has, since 1990, lived in northern Michigan, adopting Traverse City as his home. He has been fascinated with taking photographs and making his own prints since he was 12 years old. Increasing his knowledge and skill set, Seman studied photography at the Rochester Institute of Technology and privately with Howard Bond (whose work is also represented in this exhibition) and John Sexton. The influence of Howard Bond, Ansel Adams, and other landscape photographers such as Michael Kenna and Hiroshi Sugimoto (see his work combing glass and photography in the Glass Pavilion), is evident in Seman’s dramatic views of Lake Michigan. Under their influence, he demonstrates a deep passion for the northern Michigan shoreline, studying the seasonal transitions and taking photographs whenever possible. In these two images, Seman has used extended exposures to record the evening light reflecting from the surface of the subtle moving of water.
