Label TextThese bright blue faience beads were found in Tomb 27 at Balabish, a cemetery in Upper Egypt about 20 kilometers south of Abydos. Excavated in 1915, Balabish revealed a wide range of burials, including modest graves from the New Kingdom (1550–1070 BCE). Beads like these were worn in life and often included in burials for protection and ornament. Faience was a glazed ceramic material highly valued for its color and symbolic associations with rebirth.Published ReferencesWainwright, Gerald Averay, Balabish: Thirty-Seventh Memoir of the Egypt Exploration Society, London, George Allen & Unwin, Ltd., 1920, p. 72, no. 27.
