Label TextIn the mid-1700s, Thomas Affleck established a successful career making furniture in the most fashionable styles for the leading families of Philadelphia. With its openwork back and elaborate carved decoration of shells and leaves, this chair is an example of the Rococo style, made popular in London by the work of renowned cabinetmaker Thomas Chippendale. Colonial craftsmen kept abreast of changing styles through pattern books, published in London and sent to America, which illustrated designs by London furniture makers like Chippendale.
