Label TextPictures of the Temple of the Muses, published 1655, features 58 images designed by Abraham Jansz. van Diepenbeeck and engraved by Cornelis Bloemaert (Dutch, 1603–1692) and others. The engravings are accompanied by text from classical authors such as Ovid and a commentary by Michel de Marolles, Abbot of Villeloin. The book and images formed the basis of Bernard Picart’s Temple of the Muses, published nearly a century later in 1733 (see engravings from that book nearby). The book is open to the engraving of Hercules defeating the Cretan Bull.Exhibition HistoryTMA New Works on Paper Dec. 2005 - Mar. 5, 2006.
