Label TextThis impressively handsome binding is an outstanding example of French Royal Bourbon book decoration, done for Louis XIII (1601-1643), King of France from 1610-1643. The crowned "L" at each corner, the symmetrical overall pattern of fleur-de-lys, and the bold, central royal coat of arms emblazon the book with golden splendor. It is thought to be the work of Cloves Eve (active 1584-1635), who was court binder to Louis XIII. The Eve workshop was the first to conceive of the pattern on the covers and spine as an integrated unit. This French history volume has had a distinguished history of ownership. It was in the collection of B. H. de Fourcy, Abbot of St. Wandville (eighteenth century), the Hamilton Palace Library, Beckford Collection (nineteenth century), and Raphael Eserian (twentieth century).
