Exhibition HistoryToledo, Toledo Museum of Art, Modern Japanese Prints: Woodblock Prints by Ten Artists, The Work of the Past Five Years, January 1936, repr. pl. 182.Label TextIn the early decades of the 20th century, Japanese woodblock print artist Ohara Shōson developed a relationship with Ernest Fenollosa, curator of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, and through him began marketing his prints to Western collectors. He was a master of the kachoga print—images of the natural world, particularly of birds and flowers. Shōson’s aim was to balance a naturalistic portrayal of his subjects with a decorative sensibility. The three prints displayed here are prime examples of his artistry.- Works on Paper
