Label TextAccording to art historian Eleanor Kostiuk, “In the tradition of the frontier photographers, Gilpin often ventured into deserts and onto Indian reservations to do her work. Traveling on foot or by wagon, she camped out and survived the wilderness, finding her place in that line of determined photographers who were mesmerized by the American frontier.” Laura Gilpin began taking photographs when she was 13. She later studied with Clarence White, Max Weber, and Paul Anderson at the Clarence H. White School of Photography at Columbia University. As a student she attained great skill in the process of platinum printing. Platinum prints of the American Southwest—picturesque landscapes printed in warm tone—became a specialty of the artist. Indeed, Gilpin was perhaps the only woman photographer of note who specialized in grand landscapes in the early 20th century and she continued to document the Southwest for more than 60 years.Published Referencesc.f.
