Label TextThis Staffordshire platter by British brothers James and Ralph Clews depicts a scene of the Marquis de Lafayette—the last surviving senior military office of the Revolutionary War—arriving at the fort known as Castle Garden (now Castle Clinton) at the southern tip of Manhattan. Despite his French nationality, Lafayette was celebrated as an American hero. His triumphant 13-month journey around the country spurred unprecedented demand for memorabilia commemorating the visit.- Decorative Arts
