Label Text“It takes the passage of time before the image of a commonplace subject can be assessed. The great difficulty of what I attempt is seeing beyond the moment; the everydayness of life gets in the way of the eternal.” --George Tice A native of New Jersey, George Tice is noted for his perception and technical prowess. His images of everyday life and the material culture of mid-America on the edge and often in decline are beautifully rendered in black and white. Generally self-taught, Tice joined a camera club when he was fourteen. He studied commercial photography briefly in a technical high school before joining the Navy. A photograph made during the war of an explosion aboard a ship was accessioned into the collection of The Museum of Modern Art by Edward Steichen, who was then curator of photography). Using a large format camera, Tice began making photographs of his home state in the 1970s. This image was used in the publication Urban Landscapes: A New Jersey Portrait in 1975.Exhibition HistoryBuildings Real and Ideal: Nov. 15, 2007 - Jan 27, 2008 TMA Recent Acquisitions: Prints, Drawings, & llustrated Books Jan. 22, - June 24, 1983.
