Label TextGeorge Washington’s death in 1799 prompted an extended period of national mourning. Many commemorative objects were produced expressing patriotic sentiments and memorializing the new nation’s first president. This pitcher, produced in Liverpool, England, features Washington’s tomb flanked by portraits of “the proscribed patriots of America, Samuel Adams and John Hancock.” An inscription scrolling around the men reads, “Columbia’s [America’s] Sons inspired by Freedom’s Flame live in the Annals of immortal Fame.” The reverse of the pitcher features an American militiaman with the stars and stripes.- Decorative Arts
