Label TextThe armorial shield on this footed plate combines the coat-of-arms of Anne, duchess of Brittany (1477–1514) with those of Louis XII of France (ruled 1498–1515). It was probably part of a service made in celebration of their marriage in 1499. Used at the French court, it would have reinforced the importance of the newly formed dynastic connection. Venetian glassware was imported into France in the 15th century, but technical evidence of the vessels from this service suggests that French manufacturers reproduced the Venetian style.1651
