Label TextThe barely legible inscription that runs around the rim of this glass translates in part as, “On February 16. 1620, my brother-in-law Casper Vögelin made me the gift of these two glasses…by many and true friends….” From the inscription, the tall “pole” glass evidently had a mate. Both glasses apparently served as welcome or friendship glasses that were passed around during communal drinking on celebratory occasions.Published ReferencesPage, Jutta-Annette, The Art of Glass: Toledo Museum of Art, Toledo, Ohio, Toledo Museum of Art, 2006, repr.
