Label TextLooking back to an earlier style employed by artist Shen Zhou (1427–1509) of the Southern Song Dynasty, Zhou Yong employs the “big-axe” shading technique developed in Southern Song era. Look for its characteristic wide, rugged brushstrokes in the mountain peaks. Scrolls often passed through many hands, and owners might inscribe a “colophon”—commentary, description, or information about the scroll or the owne—or mark the scroll with a collector’s stamp. This scroll has inscriptions by two self-described “mountain men,” who were possibly monks, and a poem by a scholar.Published ReferencesShina Nanga Taisei, Vol. XV, repr.
