Label TextThe bull was sacred to both Zeus, king of the gods, and Poseidon, god of the sea. This bronze bull was likely a votive (devotional) offering given as a present at a temple dedicated to one of these two gods. Ritual sacrifice was an important component in ancient Greek religion, with bulls being among the most significant offerings that could be made. Bronze figures of bulls such as this one were probably offered in place of actual animals.- Sculpture
