Label TextCharles Hawthorne’s realistic subjects and bold manner of painting won him awards from every American art institution. George Stevens, Toledo Museum of Art Director in 1917 when the painting was acquired, was delighted to receive The Song: “It is difficult for me to express the wonder, the joy, the gratification and appreciation I am feeling…. We have longed for a Hawthorne inasmuch as we admire him as a painter and a warm friend.” For 30 years Hawthorne ran the largest art school in Provincetown, Mass., which by 1916 had become the largest art colony in the world.Published ReferencesMcCausland, E., Charles W.
