Label TextBorn in Warren, Ohio, Van Gorder studied painting with William Merritt Chase in New York and later in Paris at the École des Beaux Arts. He worked a number of years in Paris and then in New York, gaining international renown for his colorful, Impressionist-inspired scenes. By 1903, he had settled permanently in Toledo, where he had once worked for the Toledo Blade newspaper (now called The Blade).
