Label TextProminent British goldsmith John Scofield created this masterpiece in restrained neoclassical style, characterized by geometric form and a sparing use of Greek and Roman ornament divided into decorative zones. The tall, urn-shaped design with high, looping handles became—and remains—the standard format for a sporting trophy, but in the 1780s it was still an innovative concept. Two shallow relief medallions feature race-related imagery, and a winged Victory leaning on a cartouche inscribed “Richmond Yorkshire 1787” and holding a laurel wreath tops the trophy’s lid.Published ReferencesToledo Museum of Art, Annual Report July 1, 1991 - June 30, 1992, p. 23, repr.
