(col.).Label TextTopped by a figure of Justice holding scales, this ostentatious silver cup is of the elaborate and technically-demanding shape known as a Columbine Cup. Such cups were traditionally used by an apprentice goldsmith as his “masterpiece,” or the object submitted to the guild to qualify the goldsmith as a Master. The form was also a popular one for presentation gifts for special occasions, including appointments to office or coronations. They also were used as ceremonial cups by guilds and militia groups. Hans Beutmüller was the most prominent of a family of Nuremberg goldsmiths, who became a Master in 1588.- Decorative Arts
