After a 1959 trip to the United States, where he encountered and admired the work of artist David Smith, Caro began to bolt and weld steel into abstract sculpture. Caro’s early work focused on the human figure gesturing. His later abstract sculptures continue his interest in gesture, frequently suggesting the motions of twisting, sprawling, or—as in Second Day—sliding.
