Label TextFranz von Stuck was a leading figure in avant-garde circles in Munich and is best known for his dramatic mythological and allegorical compositions. He was also a skilled portraitist and completed many portraits of his daughter Mary Stuck (1896–1961) as well as other family members in a range of historical and contemporary costumes. Mary was about 16 when he painted this lively portrait of her looking knowingly at the viewer.Published ReferencesGodwin, Blake-More, Catalogue of European Paintings, Toledo, 1939, p. 56, repr. p. 57.
