Label TextThis cann, or mug, was made by Jacob Hurd, the outstanding New England silversmith of his generation. It marks the marriage in 1736 of the Charlestown, Massachusetts gentleman Thaddeus Mason (1706–1802) to Rebecca Williams (1712–1748), with whom he would have eight children. The elaborate engraving of the couple’s family coats of arms effectively complements the elegant form.
