Label TextHoward Ben Tré prefers glass to remain “murky” and dense, helping him achieve a glow and pattern of imperfections that impart an intriguing timelessness. In this purely sculptural work, made during a stint at the Blenko Glass Factory in West Virginia in the 1980s, Ben Tré combines power, vulnerability, and luminescence to create a work with a spiritual dimension. As with many of Ben Tré’s works, the form and tone is drawn from Gothic cathedrals, Greek temples, and Mayan ruins, and the work has a timeless quality that invokes the forms of an imagined civilization.Published ReferencesVallongo, Sally, "Gifts of Glass: Couple's Collection Helps Art Museum to Rebuild," The Blade (Toledo), June 14, 1992, p. 1 (ill.).Exhibition HistoryToledo Museum of Art; The Saint Louis Art Museum; Newport Beach, California, Newport Harbor Art Museum; Washington, D.C., Renwick Gallery of the National Museum of American Art Smithsonian Institution, Contemporary Crafts and the Saxe Collection, 1993-1995, pl. 2, p. 23, cat. no. 7, p. 192.
