Exhibition HistoryToledo Museum of Art, Chihuly Toledo!, September 17, 2009-February 7, 2010.Label TextThe first American to bring the Venetian concept of teamwork in contemporary glass blowing to the United States, Dale Chihuly helped to broaden the definition of studio glass beyond the initial concept of an artist working alone in the studio. Trained initially in interior design, Chihuly studied glass for a year under Harvey Littleton at the University of Wisconsin in Madison. He subsequently established the glass program at the Rhode Island School of Design and in 1971 founded the Pilchuck Glass School in Washington, the first school in the United States devoted exclusively to the study of glass. The Persians series developed out of Chihuly’s fascination with ancient glass, and as Chihuly explains, “a search for new forms.” He continues, “they have a lot of humor and playfulness…and a lot of geometric aspects.”- Glass
