DescriptionWindow
Label TextFrank Lloyd Wright designed each of the about 50 windows for the Playhouse on the grounds of the Avery Coonley Estate in Riverside, Illinois to be slightly different. Built in 1911–12, this progressive kindergarten, which featured a stage for presenting plays, was Wright’s second commission from the Coonley family after his successful design of their nearby family home. The windows recreate a parade with balloons, flags, and confetti. In keeping with the playful nature of his approach, Wright referred to these windows as his “kindersymphony” (symphony for children).Published ReferencesSloan, Julie L., Light Screens: the Complete Leaded-Glass Windows of Frank Lloyd Wright, New York, Rizzoli, 2001, p.288-89, fig. 382, repr.
