Label TextAs an artist, designer, and tastemaker, Louis Comfort Tiffany (1848–1933) altered the course of American decorative arts in many fields, including glass. Initially he explored the role of glass within architecture. Dissatisfied with the materials available for making stained-glass windows, Tiffany began experimenting with glass in the 1870s. As early as 1880, Tiffany had applied to patent the process of making luster or iridescent glass produced “by forming a film of a metal or its oxide, or a compound of a metal, on or in the glass either by exposing it to vapors or gases or by direct application.” Tiffany called his entire line of vessel glass (as opposed to window or mosaic glass) “Fabrile,” an Old English word meaning hand-wrought. The name was intended to convey that each object was hand-blown and unique. In 1894 he changed the name to “Favrile.”Published ReferencesRogers, Millard F., Jr., "The Story of American Glass," Toledo Museum of Art Museum News, vol. 9, no. 3, Autumn 1966, pp. 51-70; rev. and reprinted as a Toledo Museum handbook, repr. p. 69
