Label TextBorn in Paris, which he rarely left, Georges Michel’s entire work consists of landscapes. In about 1800 he was commissioned by the Louvre to restore 17th-century Dutch and Flemish paintings, an experience influential on his own art. This landscape with a church spire and characteristic windmills was probably inspired by the countryside near Montmartre, which in the early 19th century was open land on the northern edge of Paris.Published ReferencesToledo Museum of Art, Toledo Museum of Art, European Paintings, Toledo, 1976, p. 111, pl. 217.Exhibition HistoryParis, Musee Carnavalet, Paris vu par les maitres de Corot a Utrillo, 1961, no. 78, repr.
