Exhibition HistoryTMA Contempary Realistic Prints: Mar. 17, - June 3, 1984 TMA Contempary Prints: 8/17-10/30/83 & 1/14 - 2/26/84Label TextDonald Sultan is best known for large-scale still life paintings. Sultan creates work using industrial materials such as tar, enamel, spackle, and vinyl tiles. In Feb. 20, 1980 he has translated the aesthetic of his complex painting method to the medium of etching. As in his paintings, the complexity of technique contrasts with the simplicity of subject. Throughout his career, Sultan has pioneered images of lemons, poppies, eggs, playing cards, and other objects which contribute to his abstract, yet representational body of work. This print comes from Smokers, a series of three etchings signed and numbered by the artist in editions of ten with ten artist’s proofs each.
